Energy Efficiency Improvements
Ensuring your home is warm, comfortable and energy efficient is important to us at Grand Union.
That’s why we’re working to upgrade all our homes to at least an EPC of ‘C’ by 2030, in line with the UKs plan to meet Net Zero by 2050.
With these improvements, your home will stay warmer, require less energy, and release fewer carbon emissions.
Here, you can learn all about the energy efficiency improvements coming to your home and how they’ll make a difference for you.
What we’ve done so far
Our data shows that a large part of our emissions (44.7%) comes from our homes.
To improve comfort and lower energy consumption for our customers, while supporting the UK’s goal of achieving a minimum EPC rating of C in social housing by 2030, we’ve assessed hundreds of homes for energy efficiency improvements.
So far we have:
- Installed over 600 ASHPs
- Installed 1000 Solar Panels
- Removed oil from 23 properties
This represents just a small part of the energy efficiency improvement work we’ve undertaken.
Benefits of energy efficiency improvement work
A warmer home during winter
A cooler home during summer
Potential energy saving costs
Insulation can reduce noise
Reduce your energy use
Improved health and wellbeing
Only the most effective energy efficiency measures will be suggested to help you achieve the greatest benefits.
The Process
We’ll contact you to arrange a Property Condition & Energy Efficiency Survey, if we believe your home requires energy efficiency improvements.
If your home qualifies for free energy efficiency improvements, we’ll need to carry out more surveys applicable to the recommended energy efficiency measure.
This means if you’re having more than 1 energy efficiency measure, such as solar panels and an ASHP for example, a different survey will be needed for each one.
These surveys could involve tasks like measuring up for installation or checking electrics.
The surveys could be:
• An ASHP survey
• An insulation survey
• A solar survey
The different surveys will take place at different times, and you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions along the way.
Once all surveys are finished and we have the necessary information, we’ll contact you to arrange a time to start the installation of the energy efficiency improvements and work will commence.
Whether you’ve had solar panels, an ASHP, or new insulation, once the work is complete, we’ll ensure you understand how to get the most out of these improvements and you’re confident in using your new energy-efficient system.
We’ll then arrange a final visit to record your improved EPC. Afterwards, you’ll be sent a short survey so we can continue improving our service.

FAQs
Energy efficiency is a measure of how effectively your home uses energy, such as electricity and heat. If your home has good energy efficiency, it means little energy is wasted and less energy is required.
If your home has poor energy efficiency, a lot of energy is wasted, and more energy is required.
An energy efficiency improvement swaps old materials or appliances for new and improved versions, to reduce the amount of energy needed to get the same result.
For example, by swapping an old lightbulb for a new energy-efficient one, you can light a room using less energy.
You can see a list of the energy efficiency improvement measures we use.
No, there is no cost to you for these improvements. The improvements are either funded by GUHG or funded through government-backed grant schemes.
Your home will be receiving energy efficiency improvements because it has been identified as a property with an EPC lower than band C.
As part of the UKs plan to meet Net Zero by 2050, all social housing must meet a minimum EPC of C by 2030.
An EPC stands for Energy Performance Certificate.
It is a document that tells you how effectively your home uses energy (the energy efficiency of your home), the carbon emissions associated with that, and how this translates into your energy bills.
It rates a property on a scale from A (most efficient) to G (Least Efficient) and details how well your property could perform if certain energy efficiency improvements were made.
You can find the EPC for your home using this website: https://www.gov.uk/find-energy-certificate.
We’re currently only able to offer energy efficiency improvements to homes that have an EPC rating below band C.
If you have an oil tank when the energy efficiency improvements are completed, any oil left in the tank is removed and you will be reimbursed for it at the current market rate.
Your energy efficiency improvements depend on many factors and can only be decided upon when the appropriate surveys and assessments have taken place.
There is an extensive list of energy efficiency measures that you could have. You may have just one or several of these measures.
The timeline of the energy efficiency improvement process can vary significantly from home to home, however, generally the improvement work itself is completed within days – weeks, whilst the entire journey, from the first time we contact you until handover, will span over several months.
We aim to keep disruption to a minimum so you can carry on with your day-to-day life as usual however, as with any improvement work there may be some level of disruption like noise and dust. You will not need to move out of your home.
The energy efficiency improvements will be installed by our trusted contractors.
The preparation needed for energy efficiency improvements will vary depending on what energy efficiency improvements you have, so you will receive more specific and detailed information about this closer to the time of installation.
Some preparation actions may include things like, moving furniture away from walls or clearing access to parts of your home that need work if it’s currently obstructed.
You can read about the benefits of energy efficiency improvements [Here] but generally it means that your home will be easier to keep warm and you’ll use less energy which may reduce your energy bills.
No. This work is funded by GUHG and will not cause an increase in your rent payment or service charge.
As with any other component of your home GUHG is responsible for routine maintenance and repairs if an energy efficiency improvement measure breaks.
All energy efficiency improvement appliances such as an ASHP or Solar Panels will also come with a manufacturer’s warranty.
