You may be aware that some benefits are being discontinued, these are called ‘Legacy benefits’. People on these will gradually be moved onto the replacement benefit – Universal Credit.
This move is being done in stages, with the final completion date predicted to be 2029. This means that if you currently claim a legacy benefit, then it might be a while before you are asked to change over.
Please be aware that you don’t have to make a claim for Universal Credit if you have only received a leaflet or letter telling you to get ready.
When to change over
When it is your turn to move on to Universal Credit. You will receive a letter from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) telling you when to make this change.
It is important to wait until you have a letter that has a deadline date before you change over to Universal Credit.
